Let’s Get Started!

So, I officially have a website! I have had social media since the MySpace and BlackPlanet days…but now I have built my own website! It is a serious work in progress, but I feel accomplished already.

When it comes to starting a new adventure, the start feels like the toughest part. When I first started my coaching for voice over, I was nervous but excited! I quickly found out that I will have to market myself, and that was initially terrifying. I have been a fairly private person when it comes to the internet, for many years. When I first started to get more active on FaceBook, I posted a lot of pictures of myself. I did what everyone else did - complained about random things, bragged about fun things I did, tagged my friends all the time. Everything changed when I had my first child. After my relationship soured (I am NOT going into detail about that) and we separated, I felt uncomfortable with him having open access to pictures of me and my daughter from across the country. So I first made my profile private. Since he wasn’t on my friends list any more, that should take care of that, right? Nope! I forgot that we had friends in common, and that they could easily download photos and send to him. That made me even more uncomfortable! They didn’t know the story and didn’t understand why I wouldn’t want that.

So I purged my profiles of all images of my daughter. And then I took myself away, too. For a few years, my profile picture was either a black rose, or Bulma from Dragon Ball Z. When I started dating again, 3 years later, I started posting pictures of myself again. And then when we got married, I had to post us in our splendid wedding attire! Since then, I started a Instagram account that is honestly pretty sparse, and my FB activity has pretty much dried up.

I say all of that to point out, that documenting my life to the internet has been the absolute last thought on my mind. Now that I am building this business, and that having an online presence is clearly very beneficial, I will be “getting out there” a lot more. I now have a 2nd child, the cutest Cane Corso on the planet as far as I am concerned, and a loving husband. I should post SOME of that online, right? When you are working with freelancer or a solopreneur (which one am I, anyway?), you want to know that they are a real person. And now, I am putting myself out there to make it really easy for everyone to see that.
